A Tribute To Karen Lancaume: A Tragedy In The Industry

Now, this is a hat tip to a very tragic instance in the industry.  You see, not all who are in the industry chose this profession.  Some are against their will but is just forced by the negative events in their life.  One of those is Karen Lancaume.

Karen made waves in the early 2000s when she co-starred in the exploitation flick Baise-Moi (it means ‘Fuck Me’ in French).  Her major cinematic debut, the movie involved a series of pretty heavy-duty sequences that she handled well considering her only other experience was in the porn industry.

Who is Karen Lancaume?

Born Karine Bach outside of Lyons, France, Karen Lancaume came from a wealthy family.  She was born n to a wealthy family who would later disapprove of her career choices.  Her mother was Moroccan, and her father was French.  Karen was raised in the placid and serene countryside, spending much of her time with her brother and several pets. Her existence was sheltered, but as a child, the shy girl enjoyed playing in the forests and exploring nature.

She graduated college with a Communications degree and considered a career in advertising.

The Reason for Joining the Adult Industry

The path she chose was diametrically opposed to the promise of her childhood.  She was not your traditional “bimbo” pin-up queen; she was attractive, intelligent, and wealthy.  What compelled her to enter the adult film industry?  Well, it all started when she began working weekends at a nightclub to help pay off her student loans.  It’s odd that her wealthy parents didn’t financially assist her.

Karen fell head over heels when she met Franck Ceronne, a disc jockey, at the club, and the couple married soon after.  He promised her a happy family life with multiple children.  Unfortunately, the couple had amassed crippling debts and were fighting to pay them off when Franck had a brilliant idea: they should start producing pornos for quick cash.

Franck first promised Karen that they would only produce erotic films together and that she would not have to interact with other men on camera.  Franck couldn’t perform in front of a camera, and he wasn’t phallically large enough to impress producers, as the pair rapidly learned.

Karen was then forced to have sex with additional partners on camera.  She would later go on to say that “a man who truly loves you would never make you do that.”

Karen continued to make porn to pay the expenses after the couple split in 1997.  She was adored by porn producers and filmmakers.  She came to prominence by working with some of the biggest stars in the European adult film industry, and she was even nominated for a Hot d’Or award.

The Hardships That Came Her Way

“Double penetrated at a chilling 5 ° C, followed by an ejaculation,” Karen wrote of her labor.  No one brought me a towel while I was covered in sperm, drenched, and freezing.  “You’re worth nothing after you’ve shot your role.”  The lack of empathy she encountered on set only increased her hatred and despair.

Karen was gang-raped in 1995:  “I went to get smokes at two a.m. after work, and three people trapped me.”  This was undoubtedly a traumatic experience for her.  Sex had become a tool of pain in her life, used by others to brutalize and punish her for her attractiveness.

Her Transition to the Big Screen

Karen received an offer that would transform her life in 1999, about four years into her porn career.  Virginie Despentes, a writer and former sex worker, was looking for someone to feature in her new and explosive film project Baise Moi (Fuck Me), and she needed actors who would agree to perform unsimulated sex scenes.

After witnessing them in a documentary, Virginie met Karen and another porn actress named Raffaela Anderson at the Cannes Film Festival.  She knew they were excellent for the part right away, with co-director Coralie Trinh Thi remarking, “These two were really different from the other girls.” Raffaela, the small one, was quite amusing. Karen, the large one, seemed like she could beat someone up.”

Raffaela’s character is raped during a sequence in the film, and it was very tough for her to play because, like Karen, she had been assaulted in real life.  Two men who recognized her from her adult film career raped her.  The public prosecutor outrageously ordered Raffaela not to report about being raped since she was a porn actress and thus deserved it.

Baise-Moi

The plot revolves around two angry women who go on a bloody murdering spree.  There’s even an intriguing scenario in which an abusive male bar client gets sodomized with a gun.  Baise Moi provided catharsis for its two leads, serving as a satisfying rape-revenge film in which the abusers are met with blistering doses of violence in return.

Baise Moi is unforgettable for anybody who has seen it.  It isn’t an award-winning film, but it is a classic of the New French Extremity trend.  When it first came out, it sparked a tremendous uproar and was initially banned in Australia, Canada, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. because of its graphic portrayals of sex and violence

Critics were astounded, dubbing the film “Thelma and Louise on crack.”  To be honest, Baise Moi makes Natural Born Killers look like a children’s cartoon.  Right-wing French groups affiliated with Jean-Marie Le Pen attempted to have the film banned, but it was eventually released with an X-rated certificate for audiences aged 18 and up.

Karen’s performance was forceful and charismatic: she was tall, dark, beautiful, menacing, and skilled with a gun; the personification of badassery.  Audiences, on the other hand, were not expecting two former porn stars to star in a picture.

Karen’s acting career never really took off, despite the fact that she starred in an attention-grabbing incendiary picture in which her performance was praised.  She was sick of porn and the industry, but she couldn’t break free from the confines of her past.  Her six years working in adult films had taken their toll on her.

In an interview, she railed against gender inequality:  “Why are women grabbed by the ass and not men? All we ask for is understanding, equality. In porn, guys enjoy the mouth of girls, the woman takes it on the face. Baise Moi, it’s the opposite.” Karen had hoped to publish an autobiography about her experiences in the adult film industry, but she never got the chance.

The Tragedy

Karen committed suicide in her ex-Paris boyfriend’s apartment at midnight on January 28, 2005, with the help of sleeping drugs and wine.  She left a note for her mother, merely writing the words “very painful.”

It had been a week since her 32nd birthday.  She died alone on a Friday night, and when her friends returned later that weekend, they found her dead.  She was said to be in a good mood and to have exhibited no signs of intending to hurt herself.

Associates described Karen as somber and introverted, often dressed in black. Virginie said of her;  “She’s the only girl I knew whose big dream was to be a housewife.  The first time she told me that, I preferred to put it aside, but knowing her better, I understood that it existed as a dream. It was her thing. We do not always do what we want.”

Karen’s ambitions extended far beyond her pornography career: she wished to feature in mainstream films, to fall in love, to have children, to publish a book about her life, and to enjoy a life of financial security and pleasure.  She was unable to make her fantasies come true, and succumbed to the psychological pain that had plagued her for years.

This article is a homage to her life as well as a feeling of sorrow for what could have been.

Let us end with the words of her friend Virginie, who said that Karen had “a sweetness, an incredible femininity.  And at the same time one felt she was ready to take an ax and destroy a wall.”
